Can China Feed Itself?
This web page (and associated CD-ROM) contains a wide array of analyses and data that are essential for a balanced and policy-relevant assessment of China's food prospects. Is a result of a multi-year research project at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria. Some of our results are in strong contrast to widely published assessments by Lester Brown. For instance, we found that China's cultivated land is much larger than previously thought, and that there are still land reserves with cultivation potential. We also show that China's scarcity of water and land are just two factors in a multi-term equation, which must also include demographic, economic, social, cultural and political elements. The analyses are based on most recent statistical and remote-sensing data, which are available in hundreds of tables, charts, and maps. Animations are used to visualize critical trends in population change and agricultural resources.
